Now might be the best time to be thinking about detoxing our home, as many of us are working from home offices, self-isolating, even quarantining during our global health crisis. Aside from exercise, mental health and nutrition, living in a non-toxic environment is crucial to keeping our immune systems strong. In this four part series, we will take a look at simple practices you can implement in your home to help reduce toxins that interfere with our ability to stay healthy. Whether you know it or not, chemicals are lurking in all areas of your humble abode.
Where do chemicals hide?
- Furniture and carpets: contains flame retardants which affect fertility and brain health. Vacuum often and open windows daily
- Pesticides: coat fruit, veg, meats and herbs. Choose organic where possible
- Personal care products: toothpaste, cosmetics, deodorant, moisturizers, tampons, shampoo, soaps, shaving cream, perfumes, all contain chemicals
- Laundry products: fabric softeners, laundry soaps and brighteners contain fragrance, dyes and other chemicals that can be irritating to the respiratory system and skin

Intervention 1: CLEAN THE AIR IN YOUR HOME
- Open your windows daily for ventilation. Indoor air can be up to 5 times worse than outdoor air
- Use essential oils, like Tea Tree, Orange, Lemon and Eucalyptus to naturally purify the air, instead of scented candles and “fragrance” oils
- Skip the synthetic air fresheners. Stovetop potpourri is a great way to add natural aromas to your home. See the recipe below
- Add some house plants! According to NASA, Ferns, Spider plants, Aloe, Chrysanthemums, Bamboo Palm, English Ivy, and Peace Lilies can remove such chemicals as formaldehyde, ammonia, carbon monoxide and more
Recipe: Non-toxic Stovetop Potpourri
In a small pot on the stove, simmer 2 C water. Add in the peel from 1 orange, 2 star anise, a few cloves, 2 cinnamon sticks, a sprig of rosemary or pine from your herb garden or a tree outside, and a handful of cranberries.
Allow to simmer for 20 minutes, then reduce to lowest setting or turn off heat. This can stay on the stovetop for a couple of days. Simply turn the heat back on to wake up the aroma again.
